Measuring the Manufacturing Complexity Created by System Design

Manufacturing systems are complex. They consist of many interrelated subsystems and elements. This study proposes and tests a quantitative measure for the manufacturing complexity that results from system design, referred to as internal static manufacturing complexity. The quantitative measure, ISMC, consisting of eight measurable factors identified from the literature. A large set of simulation experiments, each modeling a general batch-type manufacturing system, was employed to test the reliability of the complexity measure ISMC.
